Moving Timeline: Weeks Before to Moving Day

Movers loading truck | Movers | Movers For Me

A move goes wrong in the last 48 hours when the first four weeks were wasted. Split the work into three phases and each one stays small.

Start four to six weeks out. That is how long it takes most households to pack without rushing. It leaves time to find boxes, protect fragile items and label everything by room. Our guide to what to pack first covers the order.

Before you pack a single box, decide who is packing. If you want the crew to pack for you, say so when you ask for your estimate, because it changes the job. If your employer is paying for the move, ask which services they cover.

Phase 1: The weeks before

  1. File your change of address with the Postal Service.
  2. If you have kids, update the school district, doctors, daycare, clubs and the library.
  3. Tell your utilities, medical offices, bank, insurers and government offices that you are moving.
  4. Tell family and friends. People forget this one.

The full list is in our checklist of who to notify when you move.

Phase 2: The days before

  1. Label every box with its contents and the room it is going to.
  2. Catalog and label your electronics. Wrap any liquids one at a time.
  3. Get rid of flammables the right way: aerosol cans, cleaning fluids and paint. They can ruin everything else in the truck.
  4. Drain the oil and gas from your lawn mower and other power tools.
  5. Pack prescriptions and daily necessities in one suitcase you keep with you. If you are flying, carry it on.
  6. Make three short lists for the crew: fragile items, items that are not being moved, and what you want first at the new place.

Phase 3: Moving day

  1. Be there, or name one person who can answer questions about the delivery.
  2. Walk the house one last time. Check that everything is shut off, unplugged, disconnected and locked.
  3. Help direct the crew as they unload, so boxes land in the right rooms.
  4. Keep your moving documents together in one safe place. You may need them at tax time.
  5. Check with the post office for held mail and tell them you are ready for delivery.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I start packing?

Four to six weeks for a typical home. Start with the rooms and items you use least.

When should I change my address?

About two weeks before you move, so forwarding is active when you arrive.

Do I need to be home on moving day?

You or someone you trust should be, so the crew has one person to ask about where things go.
